(Safer hand hygiene toolkit) In 2011, Providence St. Patrick Hospital set out to review the use of hand soaps containing triclosan due to emerging health and environmental concerns. New data and recommendations from authoritative bodies helped convince the Infection Prevention team that a switch was warranted. In 2012, Providence St. Patrick Hospital was able to eliminate triclosan from hand soaps in all areas of the hospital. Health care’s contributions to climate change also contribute to many of the diseases we care for, which stands in contrast to a hospital’s healing mission and commitment to “do no harm.” The U.S. health care sector’s greenhouse emissions make up 8.5% of the U.S. total, and American health care facilities emit more greenhouse gas than the entire United Kingdom.
It is imperative that health systems set a net-zero goal for no later than 2050 to limit global warming to 1.5° C and avoid the most catastrophic impacts of climate change.

California’s widely varying weather, coastal location, and large population mean the state is feeling the effects of climate change sooner and more severely than other regions. Severe heat waves, prolonged drought, uncontrollable wildfires, increased flooding, poor air quality, invasive species, and increased disease have already begun to impact every aspect of life in the… Read More
