These documents provide guidance for manufacturers wishing to meet Health Care Without Harm’s Healthy Flooring criteria. The criteria apply to all flooring except carpet, fluid applied floors, and concrete. The criteria do not apply to floor leveling compounds or underlayment.
Manufacturers can signal the market that their products meet the criteria below by applying for the Greenhealth Approved seal. Products that pass vetting can achieve either a Silver or Gold Healthy Flooring rating through Greenhealth Approved.

There is increased concern over pharmaceuticals in waterways. There are “no drugs down the drain” rules in certain states. And harm can come from unauthorized access to controlled substances and the resulting wastage. Health care facilities must address these issues and ensure alignment with Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations as well as local rules. So Practice Greenhealth and a team of stakeholders developed this guidance to support hospitals and clinicians in managing controlled substances and the resulting wastage.

Paul brings more than three decades of diverse nonprofit management and leadership to the organization. Prior to joining Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth in 2011, Paul served as director of programs for the Healthy Building Network, as programs director at the international environmental organization Greenpeace, and as strategic campaigns coordinator for the United Steelworkers of America. Leading hospitals are targeting the surgical suite to reduce waste, energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and supply costs. Those participating in Practice Greenhealth’s Environmental Excellence Awards reported combined savings of more than $58.6 million in their ORs last year.
