(Health Care Without Harm) Across the country, health professionals are developing resolutions calling for an end to the procurement of meat produced with the routine (non-therapeutic) use of medically important antibiotics, to preserve the efficacy of these drugs for human medicine. Health Care Without Harm has developed a toolkit of helpful resources for facilities.
The toolkit includes a how-to guide for organizing the development and passage of a resolution in your facility, professional association or medical society; and sample resolution templates.

Practice Greenhealth’s Awards program has celebrated sustainability success since 2002. The Awards recognize the different players in the greening community (hospitals, clinics, manufacturers, GPOs, A&E firms, etc.). In an effort to protect personnel and the environment, it is the policy of NYU Langone Medical Center to eliminate the use of mercury-containing products and equipment where safe, effective alternatives exist. The mercury elimination program requires that where no acceptable substitute is available, products containing mercury will be clearly labeled, inventoried, safely handled and properly disposed of with the goal of phasing out all remaining mercury-containing materials as new alternatives are identified.

The adoption of a plumbed-in filtered water system into Partners HealthCare McLean Hospital, in Boston, has resulted in the elimination of plastic bottles. In the inpatient areas alone: The FY08 baseline water per patient day expense was $0.97. By FY2011, patient per day expense was reduced to $.02. Annual recurring savings estimated at $38,000 (comparing FY08 to subsequent years). The hospital has reduced plastic waste, and the wasted time and effort (ordering, delivering, stocking), storage space and expense associated with plastic water bottle use.
