Calculating Scope 3 emissions for Environmental Excellence Awards applications
Need help completing the Scope 3 requirement for your Environmental Excellence Awards application?
In this short walkthrough, Practice Greenhealth’s Associate Director of Awards, Katie Pittman, demonstrates how to use the Health Care Emissions Impact Calculator (HCEIC) to calculate two accessible Scope 3 categories, waste generated in operations (category 5) and fuel- and energy-related activities (category 3), using data many organizations already collect. The resulting emissions values can be entered directly into the climate section of your application.
Reminder: Only one Scope 3 category is required to qualify for an award.

We’ve identified that the v2.2 version of the calculator contains an error for Natural Gas emissions in Category 3 of Scope 3. We're working on an updated version of the tool for release later this spring, but for the 2026 application cycle, we recommend that you use the v2.0 version to calculate your Scope 3 Category 3 emissions.
