Health Care Facility Awards

The following is a list of award applications and the resulting award designations that can be achieved by health care facilities through the Environmental Excellence Awards program.

Partner Recognition

The Partner Recognition award (PR) is for health care facilities that have begun to work on environmental improvements, have achieved progress in several areas, and have at least 10 percent recycling rate for their total waste stream. This application is a good choice for those facilities just getting started.

This recognition level is intended to encourage fledgling sustainability programs and should not be applied for year after year. If your facility has won PR a more than once, your program should be progressing, and Practice Greenhealth encourages you to apply for Partner for Change. If you apply for the Partner for Change and do not qualify, you are automatically considered for the Partner Recognition. Recipients receive a certificate instead of a plaque.

Minimum qualifications for the Partner Recognition award include:

  • Must provide current year waste, energy and water data as well as number of staffed beds, operating rooms and patient days.
  • Must recycle 10 percent or more of total waste stream (as defined by Appendix A materials on the application)
  • Must provide some data and answers on a variety of different sustainability categories on the application (such as leadership, food, energy, water).
  • Must comple and share some successful sustainability projects

Who is Eligible?

  • Health care facilities with overnight beds and operating rooms (acute-care hospitals, critical-access hospitals).
  • Health care facilities without overnight beds (outpatient care facilities, stand-alone laboratories, blood banks or clinics).

Greening the Operating Room

Building on Practice Greenhealth's Greening the OR Initiative, there are now several opportunities to be recognized for greening surgical services. Because the OR is a large contributor to a health care facility's environmental footprint, Practice Greenhealth is excited to recognize the environmental innovation occurring in surgical suites. Both acute-care hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers are eligible and encouraged to apply for these awards.

Greening the OR Leadership Award

This award will recognize ONE top facility applicant for outstanding efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the surgical environment.

Applicants can apply for this award by filling out the Greening the OR page as part of their Partner for Change application or by filling out the stand-alone Greening the OR application. There are no minimum requirements to apply in 2017.

Who is Eligible?

  • Health care facilities with overnight beds and operating rooms (acute-care, critical-access hospitals).
  • Health care facilities without overnight beds that have operating rooms (such as ambulatory surgery centers).

Greening the OR Recognition Award

This award  recognizes facilities that have made substantial progress in reducing the impact of the surgical environment. Applicants can apply for this award by opting in (checking the checkbox) on the Greening the OR page of the Partner for Change application or by filling out the stand-alone Greeniing the OR application. Facilities must meet a minimum score threshold to earn this award. This is the same award application as is used to determine the Greening the OR Leadership Award.

Greenhealth Partner For Change

The Greenhealth Partner for Change Award recognizes health care facilities that have implemented a significant number of environmental programs, and continuously improve and expand upon these programs on the path to sustainability.

Minimum qualifications for the Greenhealth PFC award include:

  • Must provide current year waste, energy and water data as well as number of staffed beds, operating rooms and patient days.
  • Must recycle 15 percent or more of total waste stream (as defined by Appendix A materials on the application).
  • Must have a mercury elimination program in place with a plan for total elimination.
  • Must demonstrate breadth of program. While some facilities have done outstanding work in one area, this award recognizes facilities with a broad set of sustainability programs when evaluated across all topic categories.

Practice Greenhealth encourages facilities to apply for the Greenhealth Partner for Change every year to assist in reviewing and tracking your facility's metrics and celebrating your facility's successes. By filling out the Greenhealth Partner for Change application, facilities become eligible for a range of higher-level award designations, including the Greenhealth Emerald Award, the Circles of Excellence and the Top 25 Environmental Excellence award. Award designations will be determined using the scoring system outlined in the Greenhealth Partner for Change Awards Scoring Resource.

Who is Eligible?

  • Health care facilities with overnight beds and operating rooms (acute-care, critical-access hospitals).
  • Health care facilities with overnight beds and no operating rooms (long-term care, psych or rehab hospitals).
  • Health care facilities with no overnight beds (outpatient care facilities, stand-alone laboratories, blood banks or clinics).

Making Medicine Mercury-Free

The Making Medicine Mercury-Free award recognizes facilities that have virtually eliminated mercury from their facilities and have made a commitment to continue to be “mercury free.” Practice Greenhealth recognizes that there may be small amounts of mercury in your facility that cannot be eliminated at the current time (such as mercury in fluorescent lamps), and other mercury-containing items that are not easily replaceable but will be taken care of by major renovations or capital equipment replacement (such as mercury in boiler switches and relays). There is, however, an expectation to identify and eliminate even miniscule sources of mercury where safe alternatives exist (such as products containing thimerosal as a preservative or lab fixatives/stains).There is a specific list of criteria to accomplish in order to receive the award, and all criteria need to be met to win award.

You must attach ALL requested policies and provide documentation to win the award. In addition, you CANNOT win the MMMF Award if you are crushing your fluorescent lamps onsite.

Who is Eligible?

  • Health care facilities with overnight beds and operating rooms (acute-care, critical-access hospitals).
  • Health care facilities with overnight beds and no operating rooms (long-term care, psych or rehab hospitals).
