Accelerate sustainability through transformative leadership

Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) and AdventHealth shared their journeys in driving sustainable health care practices through transformative leadership and strategic initiatives. HMH has focused on embedding sustainability across its operations, aligning goals such as reducing emissions, promoting local food purchasing, and fostering strong governance. AdventHealth’s rapid scaling of environmental efforts, including renewable energy adoption and addressing Scope 3 emissions, highlights how data-driven decisions and strategic partnerships can accelerate sustainability. Both organizations provided actionable insights on how health care systems can drive impactful environmental change.

Roy (he/him) oversees investments for one of the nation’s largest faith-based health systems, which includes operating capital and employee retirement portfolios totaling approximately $20 billion. He co-leads the company's environmental profile transformation including all emissions, waste, and water streams, and cooperates on the company-wide environmental, social, and governance reporting. Roy, who has 30 years of institutional investment experience, oversees a 13-person investment team that manages over half of the organization’s operating capital internally.

Lechner (she/her) is senior vice president and chief of external affairs at Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH), the largest, most comprehensive and truly integrated health care network in New Jersey. Lechner joined HMH in late 2000 as senior vice president and chief of government affairs and advocacy. She was hired to drive the strategic vision of HMH's policy and advocacy platform and oversee the network's government affairs activities at the federal, state, and local levels. In 2023, her role expanded to include external affairs, which includes oversight of the network's unified environmental, social, and governance and federally qualified health center strategies. She serves as board chair for the United Way of Northern New Jersey and is also on the board of the New Jersey Policy Perspective. Lechner received her bachelor's degree from The George Washington University and her law degree from Rutgers University Newark School of Law.

As VP of sustainability, Tafuri (he/him) leads corporate sustainability efforts at Hackensack Meridian Health in areas including infrastructure upgrades for energy efficiency, on-site renewables, green building, sustainable food, waste reduction, purchasing, and safer chemicals. Over the past 12 years, he has made sustainability a part of Hackensack Meridian Health’s DNA, establishing the health system as an industry leader. Hackensack Meridian Health was the first health system in the country to achieve The Joint Commission Sustainable Healthcare Certification, and Hackensack University Medical Center has been recognized by Practice Greenhealth as a top 25 hospital 10 years in a row. Tafuri has also been the administrative lead for the National Cancer Institute designation of Hackensack Meridian Health’s cancer center since 2022. He has been recognized in Becker's Healthcare Rising Stars under 40, NJBiz Next Generation of Leaders, NJBiz 40 under 40, and GreenBiz 30 under 30.
