Bio

James Dixon is a Chartered Environmentalist with over two decades of environmental sustainability leadership experience across complex public bodies (NHS/local government) in the UK. He has deep expertise in translating national environmental and climate policy into strategies that deliver impact and operational improvements. James has proven ability to build organisational sustainability capability, influence senior stakeholders, and champion the benefits of caring for people and planet. His time in local government contributed to Newcastle being named UK’s greenest city for two years running (2009 and 2010). Under his stewardship, Newcastle Hospitals has earned a reputation for sustainable healthcare leadership. His work to engage senior leaders in the importance of planetary health culminated in Newcastle Hospitals becoming the first healthcare organization in the world to publicly declare the climate emergency as a health emergency and commit to fast-tracking decarbonization of their services.

James is vice chair of the Board of Directors at Health Care Without Harm Europe, representing Europe on the U.S. board of directors. He also co-chairs the Shelford Group of NHS Sustainability Leads and lectures on healthcare sustainability & leadership at Northumbria University.
