{Past Event} - Healthier Hospitals Initiative: Leaner Energy Challenge

The Leaner Energy Challenge engages hospitals to use Energy Star’s Portfolio Manager to measure their building’s performance and to join a community of hospitals working together to conserve energy use through a menu of options.  The three levels in this challenge are further reduction in energy use over time.

Kevin Little, PhD, Informing Ecological Design
Kevin Little, Ph.D. (statistics) is an information expert who applies information design and analysis methods to solve practical problems.   He has applied his analytic skills and experience to promote sustainable buildings and communities and worked to improve performance in health care applications.

He formed his company, Informing Ecological Design, LLC, in 1997. Informing Ecological Design tackles projects that help the present industrial economy evolve to an economy that integrates with the rest of Nature’s systems.  He is a Partner in Rapid Improvement Associates, LLC, a firm that specializes in use of collaborative learning methods to solve environmental problems.  He developed and now helps market and support a collaborative web application called Energy Stewards® ( that promotes energy conservation within targeted communities.



Joseph Buri MS, CHFM, CHSP, CEM, Manager Energy Solutions, Advocate Health Care
Mr. Buri came to Advocate Health Care as the Director of Facilities and Construction at Advocate Condell Medical Center, a 281 bed level 1 Trauma Acute Care Center located in Libertyville, Illinois.  Joe has led several initiatives at Advocate Condell including the development of the first Green Team that reduced Infectious waste by 30% in 2009, an additional 41.8% in 2010 and increased recycling by 51% in 2010 as measured by lbs/adjusted patient days. Joe’s team reduced energy consumption (BTU’s/Sq. Ft.) by 4.5% in 2009, 10.2% in 2010 and established efficiency design parameters of new $70 million 177,000 Sq. Ft. bed tower with anticipated operational savings of 30% which launched grants of $48,000, $47,000 and $12,000 for chillers, motors, VFD’s and lighting in 2010 and 2011.

Recently, Joe was promoted to a newly created position as the Energy Solutions Manager where he is responsible for energy procurement, conservation and efficiency initiatives for all of Advocate Health Care.
