Topic

University Hospitals Health System is a Northeast Ohio academic health system affiliated with Case Western Reserve University.  UH’s sustainability journey grew organically out of advocacy from clinical staff and employees and regional momentum around sustainable development and anchor institutions’ support for locally sourcing goods and services.  UH’s Office of Sustainability was established in 2010 – since that time, a leadership structure has been established to engage stakeholders systemwide in effecting culture change to embed triple-bottom-line thinking into UH’s business practices.  This year, UH is aligning sustainability priorities around the Healthier Hospitals Initiative; this has been an effective way to advance sustainability as a quality improvement initiative and to expand the group of leaders actively engaged as sustainability champions.  In this presentation, Aparna Bole, UH’s systemwide Sustainability Manager and a practicing pediatrician, will share key successes and challenges in UH’s sustainability journey, as well as sharing UH’s strategy for engagement in the HHI.
