In today’s challenging economy, it’s easy to appreciate the benefits of conserving energy. But it’s not always easy to determine how to accomplish desired savings. Is ENERGY STAR, LEED, or some other metric of performance the answer? This session will help you to think strategically about the energy management goals of your company/facility. It will offer a roadmap for critical thinking about energy costs and building performance, with details on the necessary ingredients for achieving energy- and money-saving results.


  • Identify and explain the key components of successful energy management.
  • Identify the primary benefits of benchmarking using Energy Stars Portfolio manager.
  • Explain the importance of setting energy targets to energy management.
  • Identify common opportunities for achieving energy targets and thus improving Energy Star benchmarking scores.
  • Explain the role of C-Suite buy in.

John D’Angelo received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering from Purdue University in December 1987 and was appointed an Ensign in the United States Navy through the ROTC program. His first tour was as an Action Officer to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, J 5, European Plans and Forces. He was selected for transfer to the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps in November 1988. His active duty tours include: Construction Director at Great Lakes and Naval Air Station Glen-view, Illinois; Construction Director at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Facilities Director at the U.S. Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station at Sigonella, Sicily, Italy; Facilities Director at Naval Base Ventura County, California; Facilities Director at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida; Company Commander and Detachment Officer in Charge for Naval Mobile Construction Battalion THREE; Plans and Future Operations Officer for THIRD Naval Construction Brigade; Current Operations Officer and Real Estate Director for Navy Installations Command; and East-ern Accessions Officer for the Civil Engineer Corps. His current position with the Cleveland Clinic gives him the opportunity to further develop professionally through his responsibility over in house and outsourced Facility Directors managing a portfolio of 203 buildings at over 23 million square-feet in ten Northeast Ohio counties, two Southeast Florida counties, and Las Vegas.

Stan Price is a Partner at the Putnam Price Group, a Seattle-based consulting firm specializing in project management, communications, and education and training related to energy efficiency in buildings and industry. Stan has previously served as an Assistant Director of the Washington State Energy Office and held appointments at both Seattle University and Washington State University. He is a former Board member of the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, past Chair of the Washington State Building Code Council, and was a member of the Convening Committee for the Energy Trust of Oregon.
