Andrew Jameton, Ph.D., of the University Of Nebraska College Of Public Health will discuss the ecological and carbon footprint of the U.S. health care system. Learn about initiatives underway to lower the footprint of health care, such as involving patients in material decisions, health contracts with the public, and promoting energy efficiency.


  • Define “ecological footprint” and identify key aspects applying to health care
  • Explain why the “scale” problem in health care footprint is both important and controversial
  • Identify some of the measures under way to lower the footprint of U.S. health care
  • Identify two key ways in which climate change is likely to challenge U.S. health care in the next decades


Andrew Jameton, Ph.D, University Of Nebraska College Of Public Health
Andrew Jameton Ph.D is a philosopher and has taught ethics in academic medical centers for over thirty years. He is focused on ethical issues related to sustainability and the environmental impact of U.S. health care. With Jessica Pierce, he co-wrote The Ethics of Environmentally Responsible Health Care. The book developed the concept of a Green Health Center that would provide modest, widely accessible, health care and epitomize ethical principles combining ecological and bedside concerns. Professor Jameton is also co-founder and treasurer of City Sprouts, an urban, organic, community garden project.
