This presentation is a case study based on a two year initiative to develop and implement a formal system-wide energy management program. The presentation begins with an overview of the energy management program and the integration with hospital operations and sustainability. Next, the presentation covers a process for utilizing energy and sustainability metrics to better understand facility performance. The last half of this presentation demonstrates the benefits of an energy management plan and identifies how data can be leveraged for facility comparison and more importantly collaboration between facility personal who can work together to identify improvement synergies and prioritize capital allocation.


  • Learn how to develop a system-wide energy management program that integrates with hospital operations and/or sustainability programs.
  • Realize the benefits of developing an energy management team.
  • Understand how to make “cents” of and take financial control of complicated utility invoices.
  • Learn how to leverage data as information that is needed to drive improvements and capital allocation.

Tom Theoret has an Associate’s degree in HVAC-R and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, from Ferris State University. He is also a Certified Facilities Manager. Tom has been with Spectrum Health for the past 23 years. He began as the Assistant Director for Blodgett Hospital prior to the merger with Butterworth Hospital in 1997, when it became Spectrum Health and he took the role of Facilities Manager. He currently serves as chair of the Spectrum Health System Energy Green Team.

Josh Miller is a graduate of Aquinas College’s Sustainable Business Management and Environmental Studies programs. Since January of 2007, he has worked to develop Spectrum Health’s Sustainability Program by integrating sustainability into the corporate culture. His current efforts are focused on increasing water and energy efficiency, reducing waste and toxicity, developing environmentally preferable purchasing strategies, educating staff on the fundamentals of sustainability and establishing healthy design, construction and operational guidelines. Mr. Miller is currently the Chair of the Spectrum Health Regional Network Sustainability Committee and the Michigan Hospital Association Green Healthcare Committee.

Mr. Hikade has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. Mr. Hikade is a licensed professional engineer with 30 years experience in corporate, manufacturing and health care environments. Mr. Hikade has experience in process improvement, equipment installation, project management and change support. Neil has been with Spectrum Health for the past 6 years and is currently the Plant Engineering Supervisor. Neil is currently an active member of the Spectrum Health System Energy Green Team.
