{Past Event} - Green Design & Construction Series: Big and Green! New York Presbyterian: A Case Study in Campus Infrastructure

February 23, 2011 - 1:00 pm - February 23, 2011 - 1:00 pm -- Eastern Standard Time

New York-Presbyterian Hospital operates six million square feet of energy-intensive healthcare facilities spread over four campuses, most in a dense urban environment. This mixture of old and new buildings served by aging central energy plants and distribution infrastructure presents both challenges and opportunities in NYP’s efforts to balance sustainability goals with the reality of large-scale infrastructure needs versus limited capital resources. NYP’s ‘Red Book’ infrastructure reinvestment and renewal program uses updated asset information for infrastructure master planning to support NYP’s future growth in coordination with energy management policy and sustainability goals. This case study presents a range of NYP strategies and achievements, from the high-tech implementation of cogeneration to readily achievable practice of retro-commissioning to green design goals for future facilities.

The session will demonstrate methods and approaches for facilities infrastructure management at a large-scale, multi-campus healthcare institution:

  • Developing and implementing an infrastructure master plan and renewal program in coordination with sustainability goals and growth needs
  • Balancing complex, high-cost major equipment projects with lower-cost strategies such as retro-commissioning
  • Engaging and educating the institution’s trustees, executive officers, and financial management on the critical need for sustainable infrastructure
  • Incorporating leading-edge technology into future infrastructure plans
