Specific strategies ranging from conventional energy efficiency measures to cutting edge technologies that can reduce energy and water use in a health care setting. Assess the most effective methods for reducing energy and water use in acute care facilities. Examine cutting edge research into natural ventilation and displacement ventilation in the health care setting. Apply lessons from a case study facility that has successfully reduced its environmental impact in the areas of water, energy, and waste.


Bob Gulick, Mazzetti & Associates
As one of the founding principals of Mazzetti & Associates’ Portland office, Bob has been a hands-on leader of the firm for over 28 years. A licensed mechanical engineer in Oregon, Washington, Arizona, and Virginia, his innovative approach has contributed to award-winning, state-of-the-future sustainable designs. He has participated in the design og 15 LEED projects, three of which are gold certified. Bob has played a significant design role in hospital central plant design and major healthcare facilities. He is a member and past Oregon Chapter President of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers, and is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Consulting Engineers of Oregon.

Phil Gioia, Mazzetti & Associates
Phil has ten years of experience in mechanical and plumbing engineering design and project management for a variety of complex hospital projects ranging from small remodels to major hospital expansions. Phil is a licensed mechanical engineer in Oregon, California and Washington and is LEED certified. Phil was the lead mechanical engineer for the recently completed 330,000 square foot Patient Care expansion at Oregon Health and Science University.

Rick Perkinson, The Christ Hospital
Rick Perkinson serves as the Divisional Director of Facilities Management for Christ Hospital. He has been at the hospital for 25 years and is responsible for Planning, Design, Construction, Maintenance, Environmental Services, Real Estate, Transportation, and Grounds Maintenance. Rick is an active member of the Ohio Hospital Association Environmental Leadership Council and sits on the SORTA Community Advisory Committee. The Christ Hospital is part of the Health Alliance, which includes 6 other hospitals in the Greater Cincinnati area.
