Join Barbara Hamilton, Sustainability Manager for Palomar Health, Frances Moore, Associate Principal of CO Architects, and Kevin Pokrywa, Director of Facilities Planning & Development for Palomar Health as they share the design strategies, construction process and operations of the award winning and newly opened, 740,000 square foot Palomar Medical Center. This new tertiary care hospital in northern San Diego County, has received national accolades for its innovative approach to sustainable design, healing environments and technical execution. Innovations in medical planning and architectural design meet the hospital’s goals of improving access to care and operational efficiency, and creating sustainable, high-performing healing environments that promote community health by addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. PMC was the first hospital project in California designed completely with BIM technology and constructed by an integrated project delivery team.

Barbara Hamilton, Sustainability Manager, Palomar Health

Barbara Hamilton, a LEED Green Associate, is the System Sustainability Manager at Palomar Health. She oversees a comprehensive sustainability program for the health system, including energy and water efficiency, waste reduction & recycling, healthy food, environmentally preferred purchasing, alternative transportation, gardens & sites, and engagement.
Barbara also serves as Chair for the Novation Environmental Advisory Group and is an active participant with the San Diego Nutrition in Healthcare Leadership Team, Practice Greenhealth, and the Healthier Hospitals Initiative.
Barbara has received numerous awards for excellence in sustainability leadership and management; and under her guidance Palomar Health has now received six Environmental Excellence Awards from Practice Greenhealth.

Frances T. Moore, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Associate Principal, CO Architects

With a career spanning 20 years, Frances Moore is a leader within her firm and her profession. Experienced in advanced healthcare, research and academic facilities, Frances is recognized for her knowledge of sustainable design through her pioneering work with the 740,000-sq.-ft, futuristic Palomar Medical Center replacement hospital in Southern California, completed in 2012, for which she oversaw the development of its innovative sustainable planning and design initiatives, as well as the implementation of all Center for Health Design’s evidence-based recommendations for healthcare facilities. Frances is currently the senior project architect for the new, 560,000-sq.-ft. Kaiser Permanente San Diego Central Hospital Medical Center that is seeking LEED HC Gold. The hospital is targeting a nearly 30 percent reduction in energy consumption over ASHRAE 90.1-2007 baseline building standards. Frances is an Associate Principal with CO Architects in Los Angeles. 

Kevin Pokrywa, Director of Facilities Planning & Development, Palomar Health 

As Director of Facilities Planning & Development for Palomar Health, Kevin brings over 10 years of experience in planning, development, and construction management. Kevin's current responsibilities for Palomar Health include managing the development, real estate, construction and capital project portfolio for the healthcare system.

A strong believer in collaboration and high performance teams, Kevin was an integral part of the team that successfully completed the new 750,000 SF Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, California. The project earned several Engineering News Record "Project of the Year" awards for 2012 including the 2012 National Healthcare Project of the Year award and the 2012 California Project of the Year award.

Kevin holds his bachelor's degree from Villanova University as well as a Master's in Construction Management from Western Carolina University. His work experience in the construction industry include general contractor, construction manager, owner's representative and now owner.

Kevin joined Palomar Health in October 2012 after working as an Owner's Representative for the healthcare system since 2009.
