Do you know what is going out your facility or organization’s back door? H2E will walk you step-by-step through gathering data on waste volumes to create a baseline and track waste and toxicity reduction efforts. Coordinate vendors for hazardous materials, recycling and waste removal. Know what you have to improve on waste and recycling contract bid specifications. How much Regulated Medical Waste should you be generating? What is low hanging fruit for environmental cost saving initiatives? How do you coordinate data tracking on waste and toxic material? What percentage can be diverted by recycling corrugated boxes and paper? How do you gather waste information when facilities use multiple vendors? We will walk facilities step-by-step through gathering data on materials going out the back door. To gather baseline to help establish facility measurable goals to reduce the volume, toxicity and associated costs for waste removal. To increase knowledge on the value of waste reduction in a health care setting.

Janet Brown, Hospitals for a Healthy Environment
After 13 years as Beth Israel Medical Center’s Medical Waste Manager in New York City, Janet Brown joined the H2E staff as Partner Coordinator in 2004. She is committed to assisting health care facilities in the implementation and maintenance of environmentally responsible health care initiatives, whether it’s getting the work off the ground or working on specific projects. Janet coordinates the monthly H2E teleconference series and is on the Steering Committee for the Green Guide for Health Care. Janet lives in Massachusetts with her husband Dean and children Grafton and Frances.

Mary Larsen, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital
Mary is the Director of Material Operations, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, Illinois, with 17 years hospital operations experience. She has her Masters in Public Services Administration from DePaul University and Graduate work included conducting a Green Hospital Survey designed to understand why and how U.S. hospitals are reducing their environmental footprint. The survey results are in our resources section. Mary is the Chair of the Green LEEDer’s team, a hospital-based green team whose mission it is to reduce all hospital waste streams, increase awareness of environmentally sound practices at work and at home and to support the LEED accreditation being sought for Advocate’s new bed tower, to be completed in Spring 2009.
