Pharmaceutical Waste Online Courses

These courses are designed for pharmacists, with each course focusing on a different aspect of pharmaceuticals in the environment.

Course 1: Impact of Pharmaceuticals on the Environment

Designed for pharmacists, this self-paced, knowledge-based course will explore the issues of pharmaceuticals and the environment.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the issue of pharmaceuticals and the environment
    a. Define the context of the issue
  2. Recognize how pharmaceuticals get into the environment
  3. Define the life cycle of pharmaceuticals
    a. Describe five parts to the life cycle of pharmaceuticals
  4. Differentiate ways to mitigate or reduce waste throughout the life cycle
  5. Delineate the role of hospital pharmacists within the context of this issue
    a. Identify the various roles for hospital pharmacists
    b. Classify some actions that can be taken within these roles
  6. Illustrate what hospital pharmacists can do to help with this issue
    a. Identify at least 3 strategies for waste minimization and source reduction within personal activities and work activities

Course 2: Pharmaceuticals in the Environment: Hazardous Pharmaceutical Waste Management

Designed for pharmacists, this self-paced, knowledge-based course will explore why pharmaceuticals in the environment is an emerging issue of concern.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this program, the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe why pharmaceuticals in the environment is an emerging issue of concern
  2. Characterize at least two different types of pharmaceutical waste, especially hazardous pharmaceutical waste
  3. Identify the authorities (at least 3) who regulate waste at the local, state, and federal government as well as other organizations who have a role in waste disposal including Joint Commission
  4. Explain what happens to this waste and its effect on the environment 

Course 3: Pharmaceuticals in the Environment: Blueprint for Change

Designed for pharmacists, this self-paced, knowledge-based course will provide an overview of pharmaceuticals in the environment and why this is an issue.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe an overview of pharmaceuticals in the environment and why this is an issue
  2. Review of categories of pharmaceuticals and waste management
  3. Identify at least three management options for reducing waste
  4. Describe several options for implementing ways to reduce hospital pharmaceutical waste
  5. Explain key concepts for patient education for reducing pharmaceutical waste by the public 
  6. Explicate more “up-stream” approaches and potential implementation options
