Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals saluted for energy-saving initiatives

Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals are being lauded for their energy conservation efforts.

The Northeast Ohio health care juggernauts are two of four Ohio health organizations — the others being Highland District Hospital in Hillsborough and ProMedica in Toledo — highlighted in a recent report from Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth.

The report was released Tuesday, June 9, during the Ohio Hospital Association’s 100th annual meeting. Click here to read the full report.

The Clinic targeted reducing its energy demand by $12 million. As such, the hospital adjusted operating room air exchange rates in one of its facilities during nonsurgical periods — an effort that saved $250,000 annually. As for UH, it created an energy challenge that encouraged employees to adopt energy saving actions at home and at work. More than 450 employees pledged more than 2,000 energy-saving actions at work.

“Senior-level leadership was instrumental in building energy efficiency programs within each hospital,” said Gary Cohen, founder and president of Health Care Without Harm, in a statement. “Ohio suffers from some of the worst air pollution in the country and, as we’ve seen with these four leaders, health care is in a unique position to address this major public health threat.”

The two health systems and two hospitals highlighted in the report represent about 20% of patient beds across the state. Senior executives from the participating hospitals are expected to share the results of their energy-saving initiatives during a session today at the association’s annual meeting.
