Recapping the Greening the OR Symposium

Kaeleigh Sheehan, Engagement Manager, Greening the Operating Room

In September, Practice Greenhealth held the Greening the OR Symposium in Reston, Virginia. The one-day workshop focused on sustainability issues specific to the OR - waste and purchasing, lean strategies and operational efficiencies, energy and water conservation and the built environment.

One of the most exciting themes of the day wasn’t just the innovative, passionate projects these teams are all working on, but it was the sophistication of those strategies that we’re now seeing as facilities work to green their operating rooms. Several years ago, when the Greening the OR Initiative was in its beginning stages, education centered really on the “why” and the “how.” Now, facilities are actively searching for ways not just to answer the “why” and “how”, but also “how well” and “what else” kinds of questions. Every presentation included a case study highlighting the data collection process, how that data told the story, and what was needed for next steps.

Following the Symposium, attendees had the opportunity to visit the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, including the supply storage and waste collection areas, the state-of-the-art Advanced Surgical Technology & Education Center, and a behind the scenes tour of the Women’s Hospital scheduled to open in January of 2016.

If you didn’t have the chance to make it this year, don’t worry! All of the presentations are now available on Greenhealth Academy. 2015 Greening the Operating Symposium Presentations
