Navigating antibiotic use in animal agriculture

– A New Guidance Resource Provided For Hospital Purchasers

Consumer Reports released a study called Meat on Drugs stating, “86% of consumers polled said meat and poultry raised without antibiotics should be available in their local supermarket,” while “nearly 40% were willing to pay a $1 or more per pound.” This same study also stated that “while this segment of the market is still likely less than 5% it was estimated that 2012 sales were up 25% over three years.” Companies like McDonald’s, Chipotle, and Panera Bread are leading the way in the fast food sector to make these products more readily available to American consumers. Whole Foods among many other grocery stores are also offering these products.

Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth are joining other institutional sectors to ensure antibiotics are not routinely used in animal production by supporting the healthcare sector in purchasing Less Meat, Better Meat, meat and poultry raised without the routine use of antibiotics. We recommend using this new resource, Understanding Labels: Meat & Poultry, to look for the following third party certifications and label claims that we have determined to be highly meaningful. Additionally, we recognize as the marketplace evolves, you may find new programs available and recommend hospitals use this list of criteria to asses programs not included in the resource. Look for 1) clearly stated principles and criteria; 2) measurable and transparent (publicly available) standards; 3) third-party verification; 4) improvements to standards as science, technology and markets allow.

Hospitals can use this guidance and Sign Up for Food Day this coming October to educate  patients, visitors, staff, and community about the central role health care foodservice plays in protecting public health!
