Our story

Practice Greenhealth is the leading membership and networking organization for sustainable health care, delivering environmental solutions to hospitals and health systems across the United States.

We started out as the result of a first-of-its kind agreement between a health care association and a federal agency with shared goals for environmental stewardship and sustainability in health care.

Today, more than 1 in every 3 hospitals are part of our network.

1998: The American Hospital Association and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency signed a landmark agreement to advance pollution prevention efforts in our nation’s health care facilities. The agreement launched the Hospital for a Healthy Environment program (H2E).

2001: H2E became a partnership of the AHA, EPA, Health Care Without Harm, and the American Nurses Association. Hospitals were recruited to become “Partners for Change,” and supply chain and health care companies could engage as “Champions for Change,” aligned with the goals of the 1998 agreement. H2E also formed state chapters to create localized support networks for hospitals to exchange ideas and learn from each other.

2002: The H2E Environmental Excellence Awards program began.

2006: H2E had 1,342 partners representing 7,148 health care facilities, including 1,604 hospitals, 3,674 clinics, 912 nursing homes, and 958 other facilities. Health Care Without Harm helped H2E become an independent not-for-profit organization with goals that reached beyond the original agreement.

2008: H2E was reorganized and renamed Practice Greenhealth, to accurately reflect its new status as a membership organization representing health care institutions with interest in integrating sustainability principles and practices that protect the health of patients, employees, the communities they serve, and the environment.

2012: With the support of 12 sponsoring health systems, Practice Greenhealth launched the Healthier Hospitals Initiative, a three-year initiative available free to any hospital that committed to take on one or more of six challenges to improve sustainability performance. More than 950 hospitals participated from 2012 to 2015. While the initiative is no more, the success, lessons learned, and challenge structure of the Healthier Hospitals Initiative live on in Practice Greenhealth’s programming.
