Ceftobiprole Medocaril
Ceftobiprole medocaril is indicated for the treatment of serious bacterial infections of hospitalized patients. It is the only cephalosporin-class antibiotic whose broad-spectrum coverage includes Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA).
The process of creating this drug has been reworked using our Design for the Environment (DfE) Process with the following environmental benefits. Waste incinerated was reduced from 21 kg per kg PWS to less than 1 kg per kg PWS. The hazardous solvent, Cyclohexane, was avoided in the optimized process. Waste anticipated to be incinerated will be reduced by 36 tons in 2010 and 360 tons in 2011, as predicted by peak sales forecasts. This process has created a production yield increase of approximately 5% and a volume yield increased of 30%.
