EPP Business Leadership Coalition

The EPP Business Leadership Coalition – an integral part of the Greening the Supply Chain™ Initiative – is a broad coalition of businesses, large and small, whose mission it is to work diligently and cooperatively to build products and processes that are environmentally safe and in full compliance with business expectations and the expectations of our colleagues and customers in the health care sector.

Practice Greenhealth has created the EPP Business Leadership Coalition as a part of the overall Greening the Supply Chain™ Initiative. It is our desire to replace the current practice of businesses merely responding to the needs and purchasing priorities of those in the health care sector with a more proactive and interactive process in which businesses are involved at varying levels in the process with EPP specifications and requirements.  This may include supporting efforts of suppliers to obtain information from their own supply chain to better understand the components of their products, to know what is important to ask about products, and support the need for greater accountability from their suppliers for more sustainable and less toxic products. This will be accomplished through a number of strategies beginning with participation in the build-out of the Standardized Environmental Disclosure Questions for Medical Products.

We see these as starting points in creating a larger and more collegial dialogue relative to EPP between businesses, GPOs and hospitals.

Statement of Intent/Objectives/Operating Principles

Other components of the EPP Business Leadership Coalition will include:

  • Series of EPP Business Leadership Coalition-led symposiums.
  • Specific product or process-oriented discussion calls.
  • Promotional opportunities relative to the work of the Initiative.

It is our firm belief that the time is right to build a Business Coalition that is accomplished in concert with Practice Greenhealth—one in which businesses come together with those in the health care sector to address all those elements that are essential to producing environmentally preferable products and processes.

  1. Take A Leadership Position
Businesses have had varying levels of success in unilaterally promoting products and processes from an environmental perspective. As it relates to the health care sector however, there have been few, if any, initiatives that place businesses, in a coalition format, in a leadership position relative to Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP). From a perceptual vantage point, businesses are considered to be in a largely responsive mode, i.e. their hospital customers make demands and businesses either comply or lose market share. Rather than followers, we aim to have creative, aggressive leaders in the EPP movement through the creation of the EPP Business Leadership Coalition and the overall Greening the Supply Chain™ Initiative.

The Initiative thus moves those businesses participating from responsive mode to leadership mode in the march toward sound EPP practices. The value accruing to businesses from such status is quite clear—participants in the initiative will be seen in the sector as partners in the EPP movement—a rather valuable position from any standpoint. Thus the value is acquiring leadership status in the sector.

  2. Partner in the EPP Process
While many businesses have had great success in promotion and sales of products to the sector on a unilateral basis, the EPP Business Leadership Coalition offers the opportunity to become a part of the determination process and a respected partner in the EPP process. It goes without saying that this positioning is a superior platform from which to operate. If indeed we are able to focus on the environmental aspects of this effort as opposed to the promotional aspects of individual products/processes, the relationship between buyer and seller will become increasingly strong and productive. Thus the value is exposure to and interaction with the sector.

  3. Increase Exposure
Successful initiation of the Coalition will draw substantial attention in the health care sector and beyond. Practice Greenhealth’s intent is to initiate a substantial communications activity that brings attention to the businesses participating, emphasizing the productiveness and creativity of the prospect of buyer and seller working hand in hand to create greater environmental consciousness across an entire sector. The value is thus significant exposure and notoriety in and beyond the sector for participating businesses.

Practice Greenhealth is looking for broad participation by its members who will serve as Charter members of the Coalition and non-members who will participate as sponsoring members. Practice Greenhealth members will pay half the amount paid by non-members. As a result, we have kept the cost of participation very low. The EPP Business Leadership Coalition will be partially funded by an annual contribution by businesses.

  • Annual revenues under $50M: $1,250 for Practice Greenhealth members
  • Annual revenues between $50M and $250M: $2,500 for Practice Greenhealth members
  • Annual revenues of $250M and above: $5,000 for Practice Greenhealth members

This is one of the largest and most meaningful activities ever initiated by Practice Greenhealth. We are hopeful that you will participate in this very important and visible opportunity.
