Chicago Green Health Care Initiative
The U.S. EPA awarded the city of Chicago a Climate Showcase Communities Grant as of January 1, 2010, to support the creation of a model of sustainable community action over the course of three years that generates cost-effective and persistent greenhouse gas reductions while improving the environmental, economic, public health, and social conditions in the community. The Chicago Green Health Care Initiative affords the health care sector an opportunity to play a leadership role in Chicago's broader sustainability efforts. Consistent with the goals of the Chicago Climate Action Plan, hospitals participating in the CGHI commit to operational improvements in reducing energy consumption/intensity and reducing waste. The Chicago Dept. of Environment (CDOE) is the grantee and Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) is the sub grantee.
The project manager for CGHI is Debra Krause, who is responsible for advancing the work of the CGHI agenda. Debra is actively engaged in the Chicago sustainable business community and brings extensive knowledge of hospital operations to CGHI having been Director of Quality/Performance Improvement for the University of Illinois Medical Center (UIMC) for almost ten years in addition to 3+ years as a quality consultant within the Lutheran General Healthcare System.
